Description
This four-session online workshop will focus on writing as a post-reading activity at the junior secondary level. It is NOT about teaching reading or writing per sec, but more about developing writing lessons with a transition from reading lessons.

Participants will:
  • understand the relationship between reading and writing, how well a reading text can be used to connect the writing task and what to consider when designing a writing task using the ‘reading-writing links’;
  • have an opportunity to study the requirements of common writing tasks (e.g. short story, book report, recipe, letter to the editor, letter of advice) at the junior secondary level;
  • explore/experience teaching strategies (e.g. deconstructing texts) and sample learning/teaching resources that support the teaching of writing from reading;
  • consider how to use students’ written scripts and specific marking criteria for teaching writing; and
  • see sample reading-writing units with reading across the curriculum incorporated.

    Remarks
  • Teachers who attended the Making Connections between Reading and Writing at the Junior Secondary Level workshop conducted in Sep 2019 (Course code: CDI020200253) need not attend the current event.
  • An email will be sent to successful applicants at least 24 hours before Session 1 to invite them to join the Canvas Instructure workshop.
  • The four sessions of the workshop must be completed in the given time to acquire the respective CPD hours. Since completion of each session is a prerequisite for joining the next, participants not meeting the requirements of a session may not be given access to the workshop.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the Zoom platform, please go to https://zoom.us to become familiar with it before the workshop.
  • The following are recommendations for participation in the online Zoom sessions:
