This workshop will explore a new educational framework with a range of strategies and innovative practices to support and engage all students, creating inclusive English language lessons.
Participants will:
examine the evolution of education and the use of UDL to support 21st century learning;
develop expert learners in English language;
explore the UDL Framework (the three brain networks and the three UDL principles);
foster the three UDL principles through strategies; and
analyse lesson plans and evaluate the representation of the UDL principles.
Remarks
iPads will be provided during the workshop for the online activities and participants can bring their own device if they wish. However, using a small device such as an iPhone is not recommended.
A support package (handbook) will be sent to participants before the workshop to facilitate a blended learning approach for this workshop.

The programme is designed for in-service teachers in Hong Kong kindergartens. Upon completion of the programme, participants are expected to demonstrate an understanding of play theories, especially through learning local and global practices. The programme will also provide an opportunity for participants to practice skills for conducting successful play activities in their classrooms and to integrate play practices into their pedagogies to embrace children’s characteristics and diverse needs.
Programme Structure
1. Identifying the definitions, perspectives and diversity of play;
2. Explaining the role and importance of play in early childhood education;
3. Employing different play pedagogies and play theories when designing playtime and observing children’s play behaviours; and
4. Evaluating and reflecting on the appropriateness and effectiveness of different play pedagogies.

In this workshop, participants will:
become familiar with some of the theories on the topic of multimodality;
gain an understanding of the role of multimodal texts in the English Language Education curriculum;
gain an understanding of how to practically apply multimodality into their learning and teaching context; and
have the opportunity to create their own multimodal text to be used within their learning and teaching context.
Samples of assessment tasks with multimodal elements from the NET Section’s “Seed” projects will be shared during this workshop.
Remarks This is a refreshed programme similar to the one organised in September 2022 (CDI020230668). Teachers who attended the previous workshop need not attend the current event.
The workshop is entirely conducted through Canvas. You will sign in to Canvas to study the resources provided and engage in various activities. Please note that there are three modules (parts) with different deadlines for each. You should complete all the tasks in module 1 by 9 a.m. on Friday 13 October 2023, module 2 by 9 a.m. on Friday 20 October 2023, and module 3 by 9 a.m. on Friday, 3 November 2023.
Participants are invited to an optional troubleshooting session if they struggle to complete the final task. Joining the session will not be counted towards the CPD hours for the workshop. This will be conducted on Zoom and will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
Participants will receive 4 CPD hours upon the completion of the workshop.
Samples of assessment tasks with multimodal elements from the NET Section’s “Seed” projects will be shared during this workshop.
