The one-day Workshop shall help participants, preferably those newly-joined teachers using English to teach the Technology Education, Arts Education and Physical Education (TAPE) Key Learning Areas (KLAs) subjects concerned, achieve the following objectives:
(a) Developing strategies and pedagogy for enhancing classroom communication by using subject-specific language in English;
(b) Understanding the concept and structure of academic English and its differences between the language of school and everyday language;
(c) Developing knowledge of the vocabulary items, terms and language features that are specific to the TAPE KLAs concerned, and the language requirements in assessing students’ learning; and
(d) Understanding, acquiring and deploying teaching strategies and classroom management techniques for learning and teaching the TAPE KLAs effectively in EMI, including but not limited to: presenting and explaining subject content clearly and systematically, eliciting students’ responses through questioning, giving students opportunities to demonstrate their learning in English, helping students with different language proficiencies and learning abilities in developing subject-specific English proficiency (e.g. speaking about the subject and writing on subject-specific assignments), and giving appropriate feedback to help students improve their learning.
